Hannah Pingree secures victory in Maine Democratic governor primary, dealing a setback to Graham Platner.

Hannah Pingree, a former Speaker of the Maine House, has won the Democratic nomination for the 2026 gubernatorial election in Maine.

As reported, Pingree managed to prevail over a competitive field of candidates in a primary held in a predominantly Democratic state.

Troy Jackson, the former Maine Senate President known for his economic populism and supported by Senate candidate Graham Platner, was considered a leading contender. His defeat is a setback for Platner, who is looking to challenge Senator Susan Collins in the upcoming midterm elections.

Nirav Shah, a former public health official under President Biden, was also regarded as a strong candidate for the Democratic nomination. It’s interesting to note that Jackson and Platner campaigned side by side several times before the primary, even showing their camaraderie at a recent rally where they were seen alongside Senator Bernie Sanders, who endorses both candidates.

During a recent rally, Jackson, who has a background in lumber, has stood by Platner despite various controversies, including allegations about his past relationships and Nazi tattoos he later removed. At the rally, Platner vehemently denied what he termed as “serious, false and politically motivated accusations” against him.

The gubernatorial candidates are vying to replace Janet Mills, who is term-limited. Mills withdrew from her Senate campaign earlier this year after facing fundraising challenges and poor polling and has endorsed Pingree as her successor. It’s worth mentioning that Pingree comes from a political family; she is the daughter of Rep. Chellie Pingree.

Maine employs a ranked-choice voting system, which means voters rank candidates in order of preference. This system contributed to the surprising outcome, where Shah, initially leading, ultimately fell short against Pingree, who has gained extensive support.

Platner has mentioned that after Jackson, he sees Pingree and Secretary of State Shena Bellows as his next choices. The three Democratic candidates have urged their supporters to rank each other higher on their ballots, a strategy that might slow Shah’s momentum.

Pingree recently spoke about the importance of their alliances, stating that they’ve all consistently voted for Maine’s citizens on key issues such as workers’ rights and healthcare. At a joint press conference, she expressed trust in their shared commitment to serving the people.

Pingree expressed gratitude toward her competitors in a recent statement, emphasizing the importance of the campaign and thanking those who supported her. Her words reflect a deep sense of responsibility: “After a year of campaigning and careful tabulation, I’m grateful and ready. There’s no time to waste.” She highlighted her long service to Maine and the significance of community support during this election.

Shah, who has led Maine’s response to the pandemic, has garnered attention with outside funding groups advertising against Jackson, focusing on his past stances on abortion. Jackson previously had strong backing from the Maine Right to Life Movement.

On the Republican side, Bobby Charles, a former Bush administration official, emerged from a crowded field to secure the party’s nomination. This election cycle, Democrats hold a significant advantage in statewide offices, with assessments suggesting a favorable prospect for them in the upcoming elections.
