DOJ allegedly investigates beef meatpackers for criminal antitrust violations

US weighs beef imports from Argentina to reduce prices, says agriculture secretary

Recent discussions led by FOX Business reporter Jeff Flock with Barney & Company highlight a Justice Department investigation into rising beef prices. This comes as American consumers grapple with what many call sticker shock at grocery stores. Experts suggest a “perfect storm” of factors is propelling these increased costs.

It seems the Justice Department is looking into a significant meat processing company, particularly after President Trump’s earlier comments urging scrutiny of apparent price gouging. According to sources, the investigation might focus on allegations that such companies have been manipulating cattle prices, which ultimately affects consumer pricing.

A report from The Wall Street Journal, referencing people familiar with the situation, indicated that this investigation stems from concerns raised by the President. Notably, the specifics of the investigation being categorized as criminal had not been previously revealed.

In a statement, Trump had criticized beef producers back in November for allegedly manipulating the prices ranchers receive, suggesting this led to inflated costs for consumers. It’s noted that these investigations usually concentrate on claims of market collusion and price fixing.

Interestingly, Trump’s remarks pointed fingers at predominantly foreign-owned meat processors. However, four major players in the U.S. beef market—Tyson Foods, Cargill, JBS, and National Beef—are under scrutiny. Tyson and Cargill are U.S. companies, while JBS and National Beef are Brazilian operations.

According to the report, antitrust regulators are reviewing the contracts beef companies use, as some ranchers allege that price benchmarks are being manipulated. This is particularly timely, as national beef stocks have fallen to their lowest levels in 70 years, coinciding with record-high beef prices.

It appears this investigation has been ongoing since Trump’s first term, transitioning into the Biden administration. Interestingly, the prior investigation was closed just weeks before the current one began, also focusing on similar issues.

The U.S. cattle industry is currently facing significant shortages, with herd numbers plummeting. However, demand has surged, complicating the situation further.

Various states affected by drought, including Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, have seen portions of grazing lands diminish, leading ranchers to reduce their herds. Increased operational costs such as feed, labor, fuel, and equipment are also placing a financial strain on ranchers.

According to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index indicated that beef and veal prices have risen by 12.1% compared to last year. Within that category, ground beef has gone up by 11%, while beef steak prices have jumped by 15.2%.
