Houston Police Officer Resigns After Racist Rant

A Houston police officer has stepped down following a troubling social media post that included derogatory comments about Black people. The officer, Ashley Gonzalez, reportedly shared a rant in which she used the N-word multiple times, bringing significant backlash.

In her Instagram video, Gonzalez recounted an altercation where she confronted someone attempting to steal her wallet and used a racial slur while describing the encounter. “It’s a sick mindset and violence waiting to happen,” was how one viewer reacted.

“I really just can’t stand criminals. I mean, I hate everyone,” Gonzalez stated in the video, which has since gone viral. She appeared to mock the suspected thief for being offended, saying it felt liberating to shout the slur, comparing the experience to that of a Marine.

She went on to assert that if a Black individual called the police, she would ensure they ended up in jail. The video has since been widely circulated, with reports indicating she used the offensive term more than 25 times during the clip.

Gonzalez, who served in the Marine Corps from 2019 to 2023 before joining the Houston Police Department in 2024, has now been relieved of her duties.

The Houston Police Officers Union expressed their disappointment in a public statement. “We are deeply disturbed by the videos circulating that feature offensive and racist comments. Such behavior is not tolerated within our ranks,” they stated.

Community leaders have also spoken out against Gonzalez’s remarks. Bishop James Dixon from the NAACP in Houston condemned her comments but differentiated them from the broader law enforcement community. “Most officers don’t hold these views. This officer misrepresented her role and responsibilities to both her colleagues and the public,” Dixon said.

Overall, the incident raises alarming concerns about bias and conduct within law enforcement, reminding many of the critical need for accountability and community trust.
