Guatemalan Man Arrested After Release for Child Pornography Charges
A Guatemalan man living in the United States without legal status was apprehended by federal immigration agents after being released in Virginia, despite facing charges related to child pornography, as reported by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Loni Mendez-Escobar’s arrest took place on Wednesday in Fairfax County, an area that has recently garnered national attention due to a rise in crimes involving illegal immigrants.
“This individual has been charged with multiple counts of possessing child pornography and possession with intent to distribute,” stated DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Biss on Thursday. “Yet, officials at the Fairfax County detention facility overlooked the seriousness of these charges and released him without notifying ICE.”
Mendez-Escobar was initially arrested in October 2025, facing 15 felony counts of possessing obscene materials and two felony counts for child pornography with intent to distribute. DHS noted that a request from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain him in Fairfax County was disregarded, leading to his release just days later without informing ICE.
Authorities revealed that Mendez-Escobar, who has been deported from the U.S. three times since 2015, re-entered the country illegally for a fourth time, although the specific circumstances remain unclear.
The situation in Fairfax County has become more alarming, with numerous high-profile crimes linked to illegal immigration in recent months. Misael López Gómez, another illegal immigrant from Guatemala, was recently charged with felony murder following the tragic death of his 3-month-old daughter. Similarly, Anibal Armando Chavarria Muy, also from Guatemala, faces charges for second-degree murder after stabbing a man at his home.
In a separate incident, Abdul Jallow, an illegal immigrant from Sierra Leone with over 30 previous arrests, has been charged with murder after fatally stabbing Stephanie Minter at a bus stop.
Additionally, 18-year-old Israel Flores Ortiz received a 360-day prison sentence after being found guilty of molesting several female students in the hallways of Fairfax High School earlier this year.
