Department of Education to Investigate New York City Schools
The Department of Education (ED) announced that it will look into allegations of discrimination against Jewish students by the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE).
The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the ED stated that it received reports indicating that some NYCDOE staff had formed a group called “NYC Educators for Palestine.” This group is alleged to have conducted educational seminars discussing topics such as “Palestine, Zionism, and Resistance,” claiming that modern Palestinian resistance is valid and referring to Zionists as “genocidal white supremacists.” There’s also a suggestion that the group might support Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by federal authorities.
In its statement, the ED noted that there were complaints asserting that the activities and viewpoints promoted by OCR had fostered “hostility and hatred” towards Jewish students, potentially creating a “hostile environment.” The investigation aims to discern whether NYCDOE has violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by discriminating against Jewish students.
Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Ritchie commented, “No child should be taught by his teacher to hate his fellow citizens, and no Jewish child should be taught that being Jewish is somehow inherently sinful or an advocate of hatred and violence.” She stressed that discrimination has no place in schools and reassured that the current administration will take these allegations seriously.
The ED mentioned that this investigation aligns with an executive order from President Donald Trump aimed at combating anti-Semitism. Furthermore, it emphasized that educational programs must comply with Title VI to qualify for federal funding.
Dominic Ellison, a representative from the city’s schools, stated that NYC Educators for Palestine is not linked to any specific school district. He added, “We received this notice today and are reviewing it.” As of now, the activist group had not provided any comments regarding the matter.
