Trump Comments on Cancelled Correspondents’ Dinner Following Shooting

President Donald Trump gave a rare nod to journalists after gunfire disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, prompting it to be rescheduled. He remarked during a White House press briefing, “This was meant to celebrate free speech and unify both Congress and the press, and in some ways it did, because the two parties just came together.” He noted the remarkable atmosphere, describing the event as “very beautiful in a way.”

Despite his strenuous efforts to keep the dinner on track, Trump confirmed its cancellation due to security protocols. He mentioned, though, that he plans to reschedule the event within a month.

On that evening, an individual entered the Washington Hilton and fatally shot a Secret Service agent, who luckily was wearing a bulletproof vest. The shooter has been apprehended and faced multiple felony charges. Cabinet members who were present had to be evacuated in light of the incident, leading to the dinner’s postponement.

Rescheduling Announcement from the WHCA President

The mood at the White House turned surreal as Trump and numerous officials found themselves still dressed in tuxedos and gowns after the dinner chaos. “I want to say you all did a remarkable job. It was such a beautiful evening, with conversations around the Constitution and freedom of speech being central,” Trump stated. He assured everyone that the event would return, saying, “We’ll do it again in the next 30 days, and make it even bigger and better. I appreciate everyone’s involvement, and I felt very accountable when watching the coverage.”

Trump also responded to questions from journalists, including one from Weijia Jiang of the White House Correspondents’ Association, who commended the CBS correspondents for their work that night.

First Lady Evacuated Following Gunfire

Amid the shooting, Melania Trump, along with the Cabinet members, hastily exited from the head table. The Washington Hilton venue has a history, having been the site of an assassination attempt against President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Trump expressed gratitude towards those who managed the evening, emphasizing that it was tough to pose questions afterward but that they handled it well. When Jiang inquired about the unsettling experience, Trump remarked that such incidents are always shocking, regardless of the timing.

He even shared an image of the suspect, linking to a post on his platform. President Trump had previously accepted an invitation to attend this dinner, which marked a notable occasion as it was his first time attending this event during his presidency. Interestingly, he had been present as a private citizen back in 2011 when he received criticism from then-President Barack Obama.

It’s worth mentioning that Trump has faced two assassination attempts in 2024, one of which involved a bullet narrowly missing his ear.
