Gunman attempts to bypass security at the White House Correspondents' Dinner

In Washington, shocking security footage reveals the moment a gunman attempted to evade security at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The suspect, named Cole Allen from Torrance, California, was observed in unclear footage sprinting past several security personnel, who were in pursuit with guns drawn.

The entrance to the Washington Hilton, where the event was held, reportedly had weak screening procedures. Officials ensured that attendees had tickets prior to the event.

To access the ballroom for the main dinner, guests are required to go through magnetic screening and security checks.

Traditionally, past events have had minimal security measures, typically just a perimeter check before entering the banquet area.

Interim DC Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll mentioned that the suspect was likely a hotel guest and tried to breach the enhanced security perimeter.

Investigators managed to apprehend him after several gunshots were fired. The 31-year-old had two firearms and multiple knives in his possession. A Secret Service agent suffered minor injuries from a bulletproof vest hit.

Authorities are working under the belief that Allen acted independently.

According to records, Allen is an educator and a video game developer with a mechanical engineering degree from the California Institute of Technology.

Trump also shared an image of a shirtless Allen restrained on the ground after his arrest.

Allen now faces charges, including two counts of firing a weapon during a crime and one count of assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon, as stated by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro in Washington, D.C. He is set to be arraigned on April 27th.

During the chaos, the president and cabinet officials at the dinner quickly evacuated the banquet hall after gunfire was heard.

More than 2,500 journalists and guests had gathered in the ballroom for the event.

President Trump announced plans to host another White House Correspondents’ Dinner in about 30 days, hinting he might be softer on the media than initially thought.

Officially, the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) organizes this dinner to raise funds for scholarships. Trump was in communication with WHCA Chairman Jiang Weijia.

The president expressed a hesitation to leave the Washington Hilton, saying he doesn’t want to let sickness win.

“I fought hard to stay,” Trump told the media afterward, recounting how his security team hurried him away.

“They insisted I leave. They said, ‘Please, sir.’ There was a lot of commotion, and they didn’t know what was happening.”
