Murder Charge Filed in Fast-Food Shooting Incident
A man is facing murder charges following the shooting death of a Steak ‘n Shake employee in the St. Louis area earlier this month. This tragic incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over onion rings.
After the announcement of the charges, the family of the victim, Chauncia Meekins, held a vigil outside the Steak ‘n Shake in Spanish Lake, Missouri, where the shooting took place. The community is about half an hour north of St. Louis.
“Chauncia just found herself in a dangerous situation. Honestly, it could have been any young person just grabbing a snack at a store or waiting for gas,” a family member commented.
According to St. Louis County prosecutors, 20-year-old Jada Bell was charged with multiple felonies, including murder and armed criminal action. Reports state that Bell got into an argument at the drive-thru regarding her order. The situation escalated when she allegedly threw a drink at Meekins, who then threw it back. Bell subsequently pulled out a handgun and fired several shots, fatally wounding Meekins. Another individual also sustained a gunshot wound to the hand, and the entire incident was captured on surveillance video.
Chauncy Lovell Meekins, the victim’s father, spoke of seeing his daughter prepared for burial. “She looked beautiful and seemed happy. I guess now I understand why… because the truth is coming out,” he shared.
Though the family acknowledges that an arrest won’t bring their loved one back, they expressed hope for accountability. “As a family, we’re advocating for the death penalty—not out of revenge but to set a precedent. This pointless violence has to end,” said Chauncia’s cousin.
Bell’s next court appearance is scheduled soon, and it’s also noted that at the time of the shooting, her cell phone was detected at the restaurant.
Meekins’ mother expressed her disbelief over the whole incident, stressing that “there’s no justification for taking someone’s life over fast food.” The community is left searching for answers amid this shocking event.
