Teachers unions allocated $1 billion to political activities rather than education, according to a report.

Millions were directed to extreme left organizations in recent years, new documents reveal.

Teachers Unions Spending Over $1 Billion on Political Activities

Recent reports have revealed that teachers unions across the United States have secretly funneled more than $1 billion into political efforts over the last decade. The education watchdog has raised concerns, suggesting that this spending reflects a growing emphasis on activism rather than focusing on actual classroom needs.

Research from Defending Education indicates that national teachers unions have channeled around $669 million into left-leaning political groups, advocacy organizations, and campaigns since 2015. When adding in contributions from state and local affiliates, the total surpasses $1 billion.

The report analyzed federal filings and campaign finance records from the two largest unions: the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), along with their state chapters.

“These organizations operate like political machinery,” stated Ryen Staley, research director at Defending Education.

The two largest teachers’ unions have directed nearly $50 million toward left-leaning organizations, according to this watchdog report.

Staley noted, “Show me your budget and I’ll show you your values. What these unions prioritize is political influence and promoting a left-wing, social justice agenda. The times have changed; unions are no longer just about advocating for better wages or working conditions. They have morphed into political entities aiming for a ‘political revolution.’”

The findings also highlight that this political spending extends across numerous progressive organizations and committees, with the National Engagement Fund receiving over $60 million and the For Our Future Action Fund raising upwards of $40 million.

Additionally, the unions have funneled significant amounts to key Democratic-aligned political committees, like the Senate Majority PAC and the House Majority PAC. Apart from individual candidates, more than $85 million was allocated directly to Democratic institutions at various government levels.

Moreover, these unions have supported various progressive initiatives — from climate change initiatives to campaigns opposing school choice, often through nonprofits and political action committees.

Groups mentioned in the report that have received funding include Color of Change + PAC, Indivisible, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and Planned Parenthood, among others.

Nicole Neily, a critic of the unions, pointed out that these findings challenge perceptions about how union dues are utilized. “It’s important to debunk the myth that unions prioritize teachers’ interests. Instead, educators are misled. Their dues, which many expect to support higher pay or improved conditions, are used to push far-left political agendas, including climate issues and gender activism,” Neily said.

“Given the significant role unions have held in education over the past 50 years, we need more transparency in union spending. This way, both policymakers and teachers can make informed choices about what role these organizations should have moving forward.”

The revelations coincide with increasing mobilization efforts by trade unions and their affiliates in anticipation of May Day protests, which some critics fear could morph into substantial political organizing events.

In earlier statements, Ryan Walters, CEO of the Teacher Freedom Alliance, remarked, “It’s evident that teachers’ unions are attempting to turn our students against us and undermine our country.”
