Elliot Page Narrates Documentary on Queerness in Animals
Elliot Page is set to narrate a new documentary that delves into same-sex interactions and the concept of “gender fluidity” within the animal kingdom. The transgender actor aims to create a film focused on gay animal behavior, potentially helping to alleviate feelings of isolation among queer youth.
In a teaser for the documentary, Page notes, “There are about 8.7 million species of animals on Earth, and for years we’ve been led to believe that these species adhere to traditional norms regarding gender and sexuality.” He raises questions about the narratives we’ve accepted over time.
Furthermore, fellow filmmaker Drew Denny emphasizes the need to reconsider these narratives, stating, “What if the conventional stories don’t fully encapsulate the diversity of life? Nature is incredibly diverse.” They both express excitement for the project, as some experts believe it may challenge ingrained perceptions of what constitutes “natural” behavior.
Page, who is also a co-producer of the film, shared, “We’ve crafted a genuine and comprehensive exploration of the realities that are often overlooked or ignored.” He expressed how growing up as a queer individual can carry a weight of shame, impacting perspectives on censorship and erasure.
Denny, who identifies as queer, reflected on her journey of discovery. She acknowledged that she didn’t truly comprehend the extent of queerness in nature until she came across Joan Roughgarden’s book, Rainbow of Evolution. This realization shifted her perspective, making her feel that she truly belongs.
She hopes the documentary will resonate with others who have felt similar isolation, stating, “If I needed this, I’m sure others do as well.”
Page described the film as “beautifully made” and “fascinating,” asserting its value for all viewers, regardless of their identity. He suggested that the documentary might spark broader discussions about the implications of censorship on various facets of society, including art and science.
The documentary highlights research from scientists who have dedicated their careers to studying over 1,500 animal species that engage in same-sex behavior, form parenthood structures, and exhibit gender diversity in the wild.
After its successful screenings at festivals like South by Southwest (SXSW) and Reel Wild, the film is set to premiere in theaters in Los Angeles on May 24 and in New York on June 26.
