Sergey Brin Takes a Stand Against California’s Wealth Tax
Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, is moving away from his typically progressive stance, particularly in opposition to California’s proposed wealth tax. This shift seems influenced by his relationship with Jerelyn Gilbert-Soto, who is a supporter of President Trump and has been casually referred to by Trump as Brin’s “really great MAGA girlfriend.”
Brin reportedly expressed his discontent about the tax to California’s Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom. Gilbert-Soto, a conservative influencer, backed Brin’s perspective, suggesting that Newsom’s policies would likely be overlooked due to his image, while also warning that the tax could harm California’s economy. Despite Brin’s concerns, Newsom has yet to fully engage but stated he would aim to address these issues soon.
At 52, Brin has historically championed progressive causes—like supporting same-sex marriage and backing President Obama in 2012. His criticism of Trump’s 2016 victory was notably strong. He has actively protested Trump’s immigration policies and committed substantial funds towards combating climate change through a nonprofit organization.
Brin’s recent political contributions indicate a significant shift. Last May, he, along with his vice president, hosted a fundraiser that raised nearly half a million for the Republican National Committee. During a White House dinner in September, he thanked Trump for supporting technological advancements, and just this March, he was appointed to a technical advisory board in the White House.
The proposed one-time tax of 5% on billionaires is particularly concerning for Brin. Although he has moved to Nevada, he still works biweekly at Google’s headquarters in California. He has committed $57 million to oppose the tax, with $9 million reported recently.
Reflecting on his family’s past, Brin remarked, “My family and I fled socialism in 1979. I know what a devastating society that can create. I certainly don’t want California to go down that path.” His financial backing makes him one of the top individual donors in California this term, and some local business leaders view his involvement as serious and impactful.
Brin’s evolving views appear intertwined with his relationship with Gilbert-Soto, who has her own background as a health coach and has publicly supported Trump. She even showcased a picture of Brin wearing a red MAGA hat, highlighting their shared political ties.
After attending Trump’s inauguration, Gilbert-Soto expressed gratitude for Brin’s influence on her life choices. She has also spoken out against Google’s policies regarding censorship, labeling it unacceptable. Her presence at high-profile events with tech executives suggests her growing significance in political discussions.
