Mexican State Prosecutor Who Took a Hard Line on Cartels Steps Down During Scandal Involving U.S. Officers in Raid

Police Officers from the U.S. and Mexico Die in Highway Accident in Mexico Following Drug Lab Operations

Cesar Jauregui Moreno, the attorney general of Chihuahua, has stepped down following the widely covered deaths of two U.S. employees after a raid in Mexico. Though Mexican state prosecutors have been noted for their assertiveness against drug cartels, the federal government’s stance toward organized crime has often been criticized for being lenient or even collusive.

In a video statement released on Monday night, Jauregui confirmed his resignation offer to the governor. He acknowledged his role in mishandling the details that led to the controversy, asserting that the Chihuahua state government had in fact carried out a raid on one of the largest drug manufacturing labs ever found.

Initially reported by Breitbart Texas, the situation arose earlier this month when Chihuahua authorities announced raids on two sites suspected of operating clandestine methamphetamine labs. At that time, one of these labs was described as one of the largest ever discovered.

Things took a tragic turn a few days later when some vehicles from a police convoy, returning from an operation against one of the labs, went off a cliff, resulting in several fatalities. Among the deceased were two U.S. government workers associated with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum later claimed that these individuals were CIA agents who were in Mexico without authorization.

Sheinbaum expressed her anger toward the U.S. government for sending CIA personnel to assist in combating drug cartels without her prior knowledge, instead of concentrating on dismantling the country’s extensive drug labs.
