Concerns About Kamala Harris’s 2028 Presidential Chances

There’s a sense of uncertainty among Democrats regarding Kamala Harris’s potential presidential run in 2028. Party leaders seem hesitant to offer their full support.

In discussions with various politicians, the responses have highlighted some skepticism. For instance, California Senator Adam Schiff refrained from making a commitment, simply stating, “that’s her decision.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who remarked, “I’m focused on 2026, but I’m not there yet. I’m not thinking about 2028.” Others have emphasized that it feels premature to back any candidate.

Louisiana Rep. Troy Carter stated, “I can’t support anyone right now. It’s too early. We have to see what the field has to offer.” Behind closed doors, some Democrats have expressed serious concerns.

One anonymous House Democrat shared hopes that Harris might pivot to a gubernatorial run, commenting, “I don’t think I’m the only one who has this idea. I have great concerns about her becoming a candidate.” Another observed Harris’s prominence but raised the question of whether her candidacy would truly be beneficial for the party and the nation, responding, “It’s not.”

Harris faced challenges during the 2024 presidential election, losing all seven battleground states and performing poorly in areas typically leaning Democratic. Former President Trump even improved his vote share across all 50 states, including Washington, DC.

She found herself as the Democratic nominee following Joe Biden’s resignation just over three months before the election. Recently, she has hinted at the possibility of a run in 2028, stating at a conference, “Maybe. I’m thinking about it.”

However, not every voice within the party is doubtful. Texas Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia publicly supported Harris’s potential candidacy, saying, “She deserves a chance, especially considering who’s considering it on both sides of the aisle. She’s as good as anyone else.” Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson added that while many can aspire to run, the real measure of success is winning.

Some senators underscored the significance of competition in shaping the party’s future. Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin asserted that many individuals are contemplating runs, which she believes is a positive sign for the party.

Adding to the mix, some Republican voices remarked humorously on the situation. Louisiana Senator John Kennedy quipped about funding Harris’s campaign if she decides to go forward, even suggesting he’s forming a fundraising group to support her.

Furthermore, Harris’s struggles are underscored by recent polling in her home state. A survey from the University of California, Berkeley Institute of Government showed her trailing multiple Democratic candidates, including Governor Gavin Newsom, who led with 28% support. Harris garnered just 9%, falling behind figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
