Suspect in ‘Lovers’ Lane’ cold case passes away in custody prior to trial

Texas man faces capital murder charges in cold case from 36 years ago

A suspect linked to the notorious Lovers Lane cold case in Texas has died while in custody, just before he could face trial for the charges against him.

Floyd William Parrott, who was 64, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at a Nebraska prison on Tuesday. Reports indicate he was awaiting extradition to Texas, where he faced capital murder charges for the 1990 deaths of 22-year-olds Cheryl Henry and Garland “Andy” Atkinson.

While the official cause of death hasn’t been revealed, Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare suggested it appears to be a suicide. Samantha Knecht, the chief prosecutor for the Harris County Cold Case Unit, expressed her sorrow for the families of the victims and emphasized their ongoing commitment to pursue justice despite Parrott’s death.

“It’s really heartbreaking,” she mentioned. “Our frustration over what Parrott stole from them is matched only by our determination to keep moving forward.” Investigation efforts remain active as multiple survivors have come forward with new assault allegations against him, including connections to an unsolved case in Louisiana.

Parrott’s troubled past included previous convictions, and he was arrested in March after being identified by DNA evidence linked to these heinous crimes. His arrest occurred nearly 36 years after the bodies of Henry and Atkinson were discovered in a secluded area by a highway trooper.

Authorities established that both individuals had been stabbed, and a post-mortem examination revealed sexual assault involving Henry. The case had gone cold until DNA evidence from an earlier assault attributed to Parrott resurfaced, matching his profile.

Knecht concluded by encouraging families still seeking answers in cold cases not to lose hope, reaffirming the Cold Case Unit’s dedication to honoring the victims’ memory and pursuing justice relentlessly.
