Body camera footage captured a tense situation in Daytona Beach, Florida, where a man attempted to flee from police while holding a child. This event took place on a Saturday when officers stopped 47-year-old Corey Akeley’s car, suspecting it was linked to a shooting incident.
During the questioning, police noticed a small bag stuck between the door and driver’s seat. They instructed Ackley to exit the vehicle, but instead, he drove off, leaving the young child behind in the car.
As one officer pursued him, saying, “He’s leaving,” Ackley parked and ran into the woods with his daughter. In the chaos, an officer was heard exclaiming about a child in distress while chasing Ackley.
The pursuit escalated as officers called for the child’s retrieval. Eventually, they found the girl alone in the woods nearby. She mentioned experiencing pain in her arms and legs, humorously noting, “Dad was running faster,” which elicited laughter from a deputy.
To comfort her, officers gave her police badge stickers and toys, including a rubber duck. Meanwhile, Ackley was subdued, handcuffed, and received a warning from an officer about the consequences of his actions that night.
Ackley now faces serious charges, including child abuse and drug trafficking. He is currently held without bail in Volusia County Jail. Authorities also linked him to the original shooting that prompted the traffic stop, though further details about the investigation haven’t been disclosed.
As a side note, Daytona Beach Police did not provide immediate comments regarding the situation.
