Trevor Bauer’s Future in Baseball: Hope on the Horizon?

It seems like Trevor Bauer’s comeback to Major League Baseball might be quite some time away. However, his recent no-hitter with the independent Long Island Ducks has sparked some renewed interest.

Bauer has recently pushed back against the idea that he’s “washed up,” insisting that his fastball velocity and vertical break have actually improved since his Cy Young Award-winning season in 2020. It sounds like he’s determined to prove his critics wrong.

Despite this, Bauer’s journey has been complicated, primarily due to past sexual assault allegations that led to a two-season suspension—which was later shortened to 194 games. He continues to claim his innocence and has stated that he would play for any team “for free.” Interestingly, he has hinted that he might consider legal action against the league in 2024, amidst criticisms of MLB’s decisions regarding former players like Pete Rose.

Albert Pujols has weighed in, suggesting that before Bauer can really make a comeback, he should first resolve his issues with MLB. Pujols, who played alongside Bauer with the Dodgers, remarked that “Who wouldn’t want Trevor Bauer on their team? Absolutely.” But, he reiterated that it’s essential for Bauer to settle these issues first.

Reflecting on the timeline, June will mark five years since Bauer last took the mound in the majors, when he was still the reigning Cy Young winner. His last game was on June 28, 2021, after which serious allegations arose, leading to his suspension for violating MLB’s policy on domestic violence and sexual assault.

Throughout this time, Bauer has continued to pitch internationally—most recently achieving a 2.48 ERA in Mexico in 2025 and a 2.59 in Japan prior to that. Though some stats dropped last year, he still expressed a desire to play better in the latter half of his career, using mistakes as learning opportunities.

Notably, Bauer has reached a settlement with one accuser, but another, Lindsey Hill, faced charges for fraud after lying about a pregnancy to solicit money from him. Their complex situation has further muddled the narrative surrounding Bauer’s past.

Ultimately, it seems Bauer’s journey is far from over. He remains focused on making a solid return to the game, even if it involves some hurdles along the way. The future remains uncertain, but there’s clearly a flicker of hope for his return to the big leagues.
