DNC Chair’s Hesitation on 2024 Autopsy Release
Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin appeared uncertain on Wednesday regarding the potential release of a 2024 autopsy report—a detailed analysis of the party’s shortcomings in the previous presidential election.
The 200-page document, which is based on over 300 interviews following the election, has not been disclosed after Martin ordered its creation. This decision has frustrated observers, including Jon Favreau, an organizer with Pod Save America.
In a recent conversation, Favreau pressed Martin on the possibility of sharing a summary of the findings. Martin responded, “We’ve been public about it, John. The fact is, we’re not hiding these things. We’ve been sharing them. There’s no shotgun here.”
This exchange highlighted ongoing concerns within the Democratic Party about ensuring transparency regarding necessary changes for future success.
Following a significant loss in November 2024—where Republicans gained control of the House, Senate, and White House—Democrats have struggled to unify around a national platform and have debated which mistakes to learn from.
Once taking the helm as DNC chair in February 2025, Martin initiated the autopsy but later chose not to release it, voicing concerns it might detract from the party’s primary goals.
“We have completed a comprehensive review of what happened in 2024 and are putting into action what we have already learned. And we are winning again, even in places that haven’t looked blue in decades,” Martin stated. “In conversations with stakeholders, we all agree on one thing: learning from the past is essential for future victories.”
However, months later, figures like Favreau continue to express a willingness to revisit Martin’s findings. Favreau raised rumors suggesting that Martin had assured DNC officials a summary would be released soon. He emphasized the need for clarity regarding the party’s losses in 2024, stating, “Figuring out what went wrong based on the big report is really important for everyone to know.”
Martin insisted, “We’ve already shared that with a lot of people,” which prompted skepticism online. Former Jill Biden spokesperson Michael LaRosa expressed that Martin’s responses came off as tone-deaf and could risk alienating donors and voters.
Former state press secretary for Sen. Bernie Sanders, Brianna Joy Gray, remarked on social media, “Democrats are allergic to accountability.” Additionally, Rotimi Adeoye, a former Democratic operative, suggested that releasing the report earlier could have minimized the backlash, noting, “Now it feels like something is being hidden, and it’s even more sneaky.”
