New York Mayor Addresses Fiscal Crisis
On April 28, Mayor Zoran Mamdani of New York City, alongside City Council President Julie Menin, announced what he called a “historic fiscal crisis,” claiming it’s the worst since the Great Recession. He pointed to inherited mismanagement and structural issues with the state as the main culprits.
“We can’t close this deficit solely with savings,” he stated. “New revenue is essential, and we need to fundamentally reset our relationship with the state. That’s the only way we can fulfill our legal obligation to pass a balanced budget without placing financial strain on working individuals.”
Critics, like Glenn Beck, reacted skeptically to Mamdani’s call for new revenue. “When a politician says, ‘We need new revenue,’ that translates to imposing taxes on people,” he remarked. It seems Mamdani is leaning towards his usual proposal: a new “tax on the rich” plan.
However, Beck expressed concerns, saying, “These wealthy individuals have already been taxed so heavily that many have left the city!”
He continued, “This cycle is common. Socialism appears attractive until funds run out. And guess what? The rich people to target are dwindling. Eventually, the burden falls back on you.”
Additionally, Mamdani suggested delaying the deadline for the city to cover pension obligations until the 2040s. Beck laughed at this, labeling it as illegal.
He criticized what he calls the “highly educated elites” for inciting such changes. “It’s not the struggling individuals calling for help,” he scoffed. “It’s these elites insisting, ‘We must assist the poor, but we don’t want to get involved directly.'”
Statistics support some of Beck’s claims—his executive producer, Ricky Ratliff-Ferman, referenced a study indicating that Americans with higher education levels are more likely to endorse political violence than those with lower levels of education.
Beck attributed this trend to a shift in universities away from fundamental teachings toward promoting “human philosophy,” which he criticizes heavily. “This philosophy has become corrupted; there’s no universal truth anymore. They’ve pitted science against faith and spirituality,” he lamented.
