California Man Arrested for Vandalizing Memorials
A man from California has been taken into custody for allegedly stealing bronze stars and shields from monuments dedicated to fallen law enforcement officers and veterans in Solano County.
The Peace Officers Memorial in Fairfield was targeted, with stars and plaques honoring 21 officers who died in the line of duty reportedly taken. Additionally, a plaque was stolen from the Veterans Memorial. Joshua Gonzalez, 40, of Vallejo, was arrested on April 30 after a multi-agency team executed a search warrant at a residence on Howard Avenue. Investigators discovered damaged commemorative items inside the home.
“When detectives arrived and were preparing to execute the search warrant, they actually heard a crash,” SCSO Sheriff Brad DeWall stated. “He was in the middle of smashing names or cutting material.” The situation is described as unprecedented, with DeWall expressing outrage at the attack on memorials that honor service and sacrifice.
The first responder monument outside Vallejo City Hall was also vandalized. DeWall noted that items celebrating the fallen were torn down, stating, “I’ve never seen anything like this in my time here.”
Another shield was taken from the courthouse, and the suspect attempted to steal from the county justice center as well. The estimated value of each star is about $2,600, leading to a total loss of nearly $54,000, according to Ron Turner, a local leader of community support organizations. He remarked that residents are understandably upset and will no longer tolerate such actions.
After recovering “hundreds of pounds of cut metal from the monument theft,” authorities are still trying to ascertain the motive behind these reprehensible acts. DeWall mentioned that it’s unclear whether the thefts were aimed at law enforcement specifically or if they were just motivated by the material’s value.
Among the stolen stars was one dedicated to Kirk Gries, a California Highway Patrol officer who lost his life in 2018. His widow expressed her heartbreak, stating, “It’s just disheartening that someone lives in such an evil world where people just walk in and take everything away.”
Gonzalez faces charges including grand theft, criminal damage to property, and drug possession. A local firm is working on a temporary replacement star, with the annual memorial service set for May 13.
