Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson’s team cut short an interview with a local news reporter recently when questions regarding surveillance cameras and the city’s increasing gun violence came up, particularly after several mass shootings. KOMO News reporter Chris Daniels asked her about concerns in the community about rising gun violence and if there would be a reconsideration of oversight measures. Just as Wilson seemed ready to answer, a staff member interrupted, saying, “Thank you, but let’s stay on topic, okay?”
The mayor had previously discussed a recent shooting, asserting there was no indication it was targeted and described it as part of wider public safety challenges in Seattle. “Let me tell you one thing, there is no indication that that shooting was targeted or anything like that,” she stated.
Despite the staff interruption, Daniels continued to press on the topic, suggesting that increased surveillance could help deter crime. However, he was quickly interrupted again, with the staff member insisting they stick to the event’s original topics. Daniels protested, arguing that his question was valid given the public’s concerns and the recent event’s context, mentioning, “If you jump in like that, it’s going to look bad.”
Afterward, Mayor Wilson addressed questions more directly, clarifying that her stance on surveillance had not shifted due to the recent shootings. “Not really,” she replied when asked about changes to her views on expanding surveillance. She emphasized the importance of CCTV in public safety while also noting the need to safeguard data and its handling to prevent misuse. Wilson highlighted the risks associated with federal authorities and others potentially accessing that data.
She indicated that the city is reviewing current surveillance measures before considering any expansion, adding that a data and privacy audit is underway before further actions are taken.
Wilson, who identifies as a democratic socialist, recently made headlines for her remarks about wealthy residents contemplating leaving the city due to new taxes, casually waving “goodbye” to them during a Seattle University event.
While Fox News Digital reached out to Mayor Wilson for further comment, there was no immediate response.
