Survey: Americans Prefer a 2028 Vance and Harris Showdown

Poll Suggests Vance and Harris as 2028 Candidates

A recent survey by Harvard University and Harris University indicates that many Americans are open to a presidential race in 2028 featuring Vice President J.D. Vance against former presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

The investigation sought opinions from both Democrats and Republicans about which candidates they believe should represent their parties in the upcoming presidential election.

Among Democrats, half expressed support for Kamala Harris, who previously lost to President Donald Trump in the 2024 election aimed at succeeding former President Joe Biden. Meanwhile, 22% leaned toward California Governor Gavin Newsom, followed by 9% for Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, 8% for Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and 6% for Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

For Republicans, 48% indicated they backed Vance for the next presidential nomination, with Donald Trump Jr. following at 18%. In third place is Secretary of State Marco Rubio, supported by 16%, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis received 9% and 4% backed Tucker Carlson.

This survey aligns with the fact that a significant portion (67%) of respondents admitted they are at least somewhat focused on the upcoming presidential election, with 32% stating they are thinking about it a lot.

The poll was conducted from April 23-26, 2026, among 2,745 registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 1.87%.

Kamala Harris hasn’t dismissed the idea of running for president again, hinting at her intentions during a recent appearance at Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network convention. When asked about her plans, she said, “Maybe,” and added, “I might, I might. I’m thinking about it. I’ll keep you posted.”

Harris also mentioned to Sharpton that she understands “what the job was and what it entailed.”

On the other hand, Vance has garnered significant support, particularly noted at Turning Point USA’s America Fest in December, where he stood out among potential contenders.

Last year, President Trump described both Vance and Rubio as “unstoppable,” expressing confidence that they could form a formidable Republican ticket for 2028. He remarked, “JD, obviously the vice president is great. Marco is great… I don’t know if anyone can compete with those two. If they form a group, I think it’s unstoppable.”

Months later, Trump reiterated his view that the next Republican candidate is likely to enjoy considerable support. He reflected on the Democratic position, saying, “They really have a bad policy… I want to disagree… It’s not going to be me, it’s going to be somebody… probably sitting at this table.”

He concluded by suggesting that several individuals might run alongside him, emphasizing the successes of his administration and his desire for those achievements to continue.
