Controversial Events at Bowdoin College

A socialist group at Bowdoin College, the alma mater of Mayor Mamdani with its hefty $94,000 tuition, is set to host Mr. Mamdani’s father, who has been critical of Israel. This comes amidst pushback from the university’s administrators, as they recently invited Hasan Piker, a figure with a contentious reputation.

Back in February, the college administrators instructed the group to cease its online activities and political engagement after the organization released a report that connected two former trustees with the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. However, the Anti-Capitalist and Anti-Fascist Coalition, formed following Mamdani’s election in November, has chosen to proceed with its agenda, aided by advocates for free speech.

Mamdani, who developed his advocacy skills at a liberal arts college, had established a chapter of the group Students for Justice in Palestine, which is often viewed as controversial.

His father, Mahmoud Mamdani, is a prominent professor of African history and colonialism at Columbia University. He will be participating in the Bowdoin Socialist Free Lecture Series this upcoming fall, as shared by the group.

At the age of 80, the elder Mamdani serves on the advisory policy council of the Gaza Tribunal, an organization that has been known to make strong accusations against Israel, including allegations of “genocide,” and has shown sympathy toward suicide bombers.

The Bowdoin Socialists are also in negotiations with Piker regarding a potential lecture at the university, according to Finley Liss, one of the group’s founders. Piker has made headlines for controversial remarks about Israel and the September 11 attacks, which definitely raises eyebrows.

The university has flagged the group for not being officially registered, claiming that their activities are therefore unlawful, according to Mainwire. Representatives for Mamdani and Boudin were unavailable for comment.

Despite the university’s stance, the Bowdoin Socialists have defended their lecture series, asserting that it showcases their commitment to engaging in both national and international discussions.
