Jane Fonda Critiques FCC’s Review of ABC License
Actress Jane Fonda has publicly criticized the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for its decision to review the broadcast license of ABC following a controversial joke made by late-night host Jimmy Kimmel about President Trump.
In her statement on the matter, Fonda expressed her concerns. She stated, “FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr’s recent directive to assess the broadcast licenses of all ABC stations is a transparent effort to misuse governmental authority against dissenters.”
She further elaborated, suggesting, “What we are witnessing is part of a troubling pattern reminiscent of authoritarian regimes throughout history. This should raise alarms for anyone who values the First Amendment and believes that the government shouldn’t control who gets a voice in a free society. We need to recognize this for what it is: a systematic effort to use federal power to limit acceptable speech to only those voices that are endorsed.”
The controversy intensified when the president and first lady demanded that ABC take action against Kimmel for his comments, which included referring to Melania Trump as a “widow” during a mock event meant to parody the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
President Trump responded to Kimmel’s remarks, stating on Truth Social, “Jimmy Kimmel, who isn’t exactly known for his humor, made some truly outrageous comments on his show. He even played a fake video suggesting that First Lady Melania and our son Barron were present in his studio. They’re not, and they never would be. Following this, an individual attempted to enter the dinner with weapons. It’s troubling that Kimmel would incite such violence.”
Kimmel, on the other hand, defended his joke, emphasizing that it was intended to be light-hearted. “It was just a playful comment about his age compared to her youth. I never meant to suggest anything violent. I know how serious issues like gun violence are—I’ve spoken out against it for years,” he remarked. He acknowledged the stress that the first lady might be undergoing, adding that the best approach might be for her to address such matters openly with her husband.
In a related incident, a man named Cole Allen, aged 31, reportedly aimed to target both the president and other officials during the Correspondents’ Dinner. He traveled across the country to the venue armed with multiple weapons.
Authorities apprehended Allen as he attempted to breach a security checkpoint. There was an exchange of gunfire with the U.S. Secret Service, during which a single agent was shot but survived thanks to his bulletproof vest. Fortunately, there were no other injuries reported.
At a press conference following the incident, President Trump, who has faced previous assassination attempts, urged Americans to resolve their conflicts peacefully. He called on everyone to come together, emphasizing the need for dialogue across political divides.
Trump noted, “I urge all Americans to focus on peacefully resolving our differences. We need to find common ground. There were people from all political backgrounds present, and it was heartwarming to see unity in that room.”
