Fans Report Having 'Mixed Feelings' About Showing 'Patriotism Due to Trump's Actions'

Mixed Feelings Among Seattle Fans About U.S. Soccer Team

The Seattle Times faced backlash online after posting about fans in Seattle having “mixed feelings” towards supporting the U.S. men’s national soccer team during the FIFA World Cup.

In a post on X, an article mentioned a comment from Carrie Lefkowitz, who expressed difficulty in separating her affection for U.S. soccer with issues like high ticket prices and President Trump’s immigration policies. She said it’s “tough” to root for the U.S. when she feels Trump is negatively influencing America’s image globally.

Lefkowitz noted that while it’s hard to imagine cheering for U.S. players without the World Cup, it’s equally challenging to feel excited about it given the current political climate.

On the other hand, some who oppose Trump, like Mark Cairns, argue their support for the country remains intact. Cairns remarked that he would still cheer for America, except in extreme circumstances. He traveled to Los Angeles for a match and is preparing for a game against Australia on Friday.

Not everyone feels conflicted, as several local soccer enthusiasts believe that politics should not affect their enjoyment of the tournament. They view it as a chance for fans from various backgrounds to unite over a shared love for the sport.

The Seattle Times noted that some soccer fans have mixed feelings about showing patriotic support, focusing on the ways Trump’s actions have complicated those emotions.

Responses to the article included frustration and disagreement. Some commenters pointed out the strong support for the U.S. team at the World Cup, even calling out the Seattle Times for their portrayal.

Shirazi Hasmi, a Senior Digital Strategist, referenced a FOX Sports video highlighting the enthusiastic crowds supporting the U.S.

In reaction, Fox News host Laura Ingraham criticized the article, stating that some commentators seem to “hate this country.” Others encouraged those feeling negative to either embrace their American pride or reconsider their stances.

Actor Rob Schneider simply added to the chorus of support with his enthusiastic posts about rooting for the U.S.

Barstool Sports shared a video showing Seattle crowds chanting “USA!” in celebration during the tournament, reflecting a vibrant local spirit.

Greg Bell, a reporter for the Tacoma News Tribune, shared his experience witnessing the emotional atmosphere during the national anthem at a recent game, capturing the pride felt by many fans in attendance.
