San Diego Padres Expected to Change Ownership
It looks like the San Diego Padres are set for a new chapter in ownership. Major League Baseball has reportedly reached a deal to transfer control of the team to a group headed by Puerto Rican businessman Jose E. Feliciano and his wife, Kwanza Jones.
This agreement has been sanctioned by the family of the late owner, Peter Seidler, who was part of the current ownership cohort. It’s noteworthy that the decision to sell follows Seidler’s passing three years ago, and since then, his brother John Seidler has taken on the role of chairman.
However, the deal is not official yet; it still requires league approval. Last month, it became public that the Padres are valued at around $3.9 billion. Although the exact sale price hasn’t been disclosed, it’s anticipated that this transaction could set a new record for the most paid for an MLB team, eclipsing Steve Cohen’s $2.42 billion purchase of the New York Mets back in 2020.
The identities of other investors in the group haven’t been revealed. Feliciano and Jones expressed in a joint statement that they see themselves as a “unifying force” for the San Diego community and believe they’ll help establish a strong foundation for the franchise.
They stated, “The Padres are more than just a baseball team; they represent a connection and sense of belonging in San Diego. We feel honored to embark on this new journey as business partners and a family. We’ve worked hard for what we have achieved and are proud of it. We recognize the same spirit in this team and its fans, and we understand what it takes to succeed. We are dedicated to showing up, listening, and earning the community’s trust while building on the foundation laid by the Padres.”
The group mentioned their commitment goes beyond just wins and losses; it includes making a meaningful impact within the community.
Feliciano added that this is about enhancing pride, energy, and connections in the area, with an emphasis on ensuring the team remains accessible for future generations while striving for a World Series championship.
Peter Seidler initially joined the Padres’ ownership in 2012, when John Moore sold the team for $800 million to a group led by Ron Fowler. After Peter took the reins, he quickly gained the affection of San Diego fans, thanks largely to general manager AJ Preller’s proactive financial strategies.
As San Diego’s only representative in the major North American sports leagues, the Padres have drawn considerable attention. In fact, they ranked second in MLB attendance last season.
The Padres are currently doing well, sitting in second place in the National League West, with a record of 19 wins and 13 losses as they prepare for a final three-game series against the Chicago White Sox. Notably, the team has reached the playoffs in four of the last six years.
If the deal goes through, Feliciano will become baseball’s second Latino owner, following Arte Moreno of the Los Angeles Angels.
