Beckman Calls for Kimmel’s Boycott Following Controversial Joke
Mark Beckman, a senior adviser for Melania Trump, urged advertisers to withdraw their support from Jimmy Kimmel’s show after he joked about the first lady by referring to her as a “widow.”
“Why would ABC back that? That’s the big question,” Beckman remarked. “And, more importantly, why do Kimmel’s advertisers continue to support him?” His point highlighted what he found to be a strange situation.
The first lady had criticized Kimmel for using “hateful and violent rhetoric” after he labeled her a “pregnant widow” during a parody related to the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which occurred shortly before an assassination attempt. Kimmel defended his comedy bit, saying it was aimed at the age gap, not a call for violence.
“Mr. Kimmel should be fired. ABC should end his contract,” Beckman stated, echoing the sentiments of the first lady in her response to Kimmel.
In a post on X, she labeled Kimmel a “coward” and insisted ABC should “stand up” against his comments. She expressed, “His monologue about my family isn’t comedy. It spreads corrosive sentiments that worsen our political climate. Individuals like Kimmel shouldn’t have access to our homes, promoting hate.”
Beckman, also the CEO of an advertising agency, characterized the situation as a branding issue rather than a matter of free speech. “Why would ABC partner with someone who continuously undermines the very fabric of our society with divisive rhetoric?” he questioned, emphasizing that this kind of speech leads nowhere good.
He referenced a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, which indicated that left-wing terrorist incidents were projected to surpass those of right-wing incidents for the first time in over three decades.
Beckman remarked, “The level of political violence—be it from the left or the right—is alarmingly high.” He noted that the first lady, despite these controversies, is very diligent, always attentive to everything that occurs around her.
“She really pays attention to media narratives but is primarily focused on generating positive outcomes for the country,” Beckman shared.
Kimmel has previously faced backlash for insensitive comments, notably regarding Charlie Kirk’s situation, leading to criticism that he politicized the matter. He was temporarily pulled from the air before issuing an apology upon his return.
The first lady is focused on enhancing children’s access to technology and education, having recently invited 45 countries to participate in a global summit, “Building Our Future Together.”
“Ultimately, she’s devoted to protecting American families and children. The gossip and innuendo don’t concern her much,” Beckman concluded.
Efforts to get a response from ABC and Kimmel’s representatives went unanswered.
