Sanders campaigns in Michigan for progressive Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed

During his “Fight the Oligarchy” tour, Senator Bernie Sanders gathered supporters in Detroit, Michigan, on Sunday. He was joined by Senate hopeful Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and House candidate Rep. Donavan McKinney.

Sanders emphasized the need for courageous leaders in Washington, D.C., ones who are willing to confront the existing political system and the oligarchy. He pointed out the importance of having Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in the Senate to champion these values.

El-Sayed, known for his push for “Medicare for All” and the dismantling of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), reiterated these themes during the rally.

In a past gubernatorial race, Sanders had backed El-Sayed, who ultimately lost to Gretchen Whitmer in the Democratic primary. El-Sayed is now contesting for a seat in Michigan’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary, facing off against notable candidates like Rep. Haley Stevens and State Sen. Mallory McMorrow.

McKinney, too, supports policies such as “Medicare for All” and the abolishment of ICE, as he runs in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District against incumbent Congressman Shri Thanedar.

Sanders expressed enthusiasm about the recent influx of progressive members in Congress, saying he looks forward to having Donavan McKinney join their ranks.
