Man charged with shooting at Secret Service near the White House, child bystander hurt

Shooting Incident Near Washington Monument

On Monday, a security situation unfolded near the Washington Monument involving a U.S. Secret Service agent and an armed individual, resulting in injuries to a child bystander.

According to Secret Service Deputy Commissioner Matt Quinn, the altercation began shortly after Vice President J.D. Vance’s motorcade went through the area. Plainclothes officers observed someone behaving suspiciously and believed they were carrying a weapon.

As uniformed personnel approached, the suspect reportedly drew a gun and fired at the officers, who then returned fire. The suspect was hit and taken to the hospital, but a child nearby was also injured. Fortunately, the child’s injuries are said to be non-life threatening, and they are currently receiving medical attention.

The shooting led to immediate security measures, including a brief lockdown of the White House, where President Donald Trump was hosting a small business event. Secret Service agents moved reporters into a secure area for safety, while the President continued with his press conference as planned. The closeness of the vice president’s route to the President’s location raised concerns, yet Quinn stated that it was “unclear” if any officials were specifically targeted or if the incident was connected to the vice president’s presence.

Authorities advised people to avoid the Washington Monument while emergency teams and investigators addressed the situation.

When asked about potential ties to the President, Quinn remarked, “I’m not going to speculate on that.” He expressed uncertainty about whether the attack was directed at the President.

The Metropolitan Police are currently gathering evidence and piecing together the details of what transpired. Although the investigation is ongoing, officials confirmed that the area is secure and there is no immediate threat to the public.
