Explosion at Fireworks Factory in China
An explosion at a fireworks factory in central China has resulted in at least 21 fatalities and left 61 individuals injured, as reported by state media.
The blast took place on Monday afternoon in Liuyang city, which is administered by Changsha in Hunan province, according to Xinhua news agency.
The facility, owned by Liuyang Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Exhibition Co., Ltd., is situated in Liuyang, a city known for its fireworks production that falls under the jurisdiction of Changsha, the Hunan provincial capital.
Aerial images broadcasted by state media displayed white smoke rising from the site on Tuesday, alongside the wreckage of damaged structures and debris scattered across the area.
Reports indicate that close to 500 firefighters, rescue teams, and medical staff were deployed to the scene. Authorities have identified two black powder warehouses nearby, elevating safety concerns, necessitating the evacuation of people in potentially dangerous zones.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged “all-out efforts” to aid those injured and to locate any missing persons. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the explosion’s cause and insisted on holding those accountable responsible. Moreover, he called for improved risk evaluation and hazard management in critical industries, alongside bolstering public safety measures.
It has been noted that after significant accidents, President Xi routinely provides “important instructions” to local officials regarding safety protocols.
Investigations are underway to determine what caused the explosion, and unspecified regulatory actions have been initiated against those deemed responsible.
In an effort to prevent further incidents during the ongoing rescue operations, teams employed techniques like spraying and humidifying the area to mitigate hazards. Additionally, robots were utilized to assist in the search and rescue efforts.
