California’s Legal Action Against Sable Offshore
California has taken a significant step by filing a petition in federal court aimed at halting Sable Offshore from extracting oil along the Santa Barbara coastline.
This action marks a notable move by state Attorney General Rob Bonta, who submitted the complaint on Friday and publicly addressed it on Monday.
Bonta criticized Sable’s approach, stating, “Sable has been trying to sidestep California’s environmental protections by pushing the federal government for an unlawful order, and now they are unlawfully transporting oil via the Las Flores Pipeline.”
This legal confrontation is tied to an executive order from March by President Trump, which sought to revive offshore oil drilling in Southern California, citing the need for national energy security.
That order invoked the Cold War-era Defense Production Act, prompted by worries that potential conflict between the U.S. and Iran could disrupt oil supplies.
In reaction to this directive, Sable Offshore, led by Federal Energy Secretary Chris Wright, resumed its operations at the Santa Ynez offshore oil platform and pipeline.
In a previous legal win for Bonta and other California Democrats, a state judge ruled last month that the President’s order did not remove the state-level injunction that had prevented operations from restarting.
Environmental advocates and anti-Trump Democrats had pushed for the injunction, arguing that the federal order was “unlawful” and that state permission was necessary for the plant’s operations to resume.
It’s worth noting the Las Flores Pipeline had been shut down since 2015 after a substantial oil spill contaminated the Pacific Ocean with thousands of barrels of crude oil.
According to Sable’s attorney, the company plans to continue pumping oil. “We hope to persuade the court that this executive order clearly takes precedence over any state court injunction,” said Jeffrey Dinzer, representing Sable Offshore.
Bonta is counting on the federal court to assess and possibly issue an injunction, asserting that the order from Wright should be temporarily suspended.
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed support for the legal efforts, stating, “Donald Trump’s reckless and costly war with Iran is causing families to face higher gas and grocery prices, while his oil industry benefactors are benefiting from this attempt to illegally restart the Sable pipeline.” He emphasized, “California is urging the courts to halt this blatant misuse of authority.”
