Reporter Challenges Pete Hegseth About Trump Shifting His Stance on Key Iran War Request

Questions Raised Over Trump’s Stance on Iran’s Surrender

On Tuesday, reporters engaged Army Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding President Donald Trump’s unexpected shift on Iran’s call for unconditional surrender.

In early March, Iran demanded “unconditional surrender,” stating no other terms would be considered. However, they later retracted this demand, opening the door for negotiations. Newsmax’s James Rosen questioned Hegseth about when Trump decided to backtrack on this stance.

Rosen noted, “On the first day of this conflict, President Trump addressed the Iranian people, telling them, ‘when we’re done, take over your government. It’s yours.’ Then, seven days into the conflict, he stated on Truth Social that there would be ‘no deal with Iran other than unconditional surrender.’ What happened to that promise, and when did he decide to accept their terms?”

Responding, Hegseth remarked, “James, you started strong but ended where we expected. The president is not surrendering. He holds the cards, and we have the upper hand. Project Freedom will enhance that position. The president is focused on preventing Iran from going nuclear—that’s the priority.” He added that any agreements would ultimately be up to the Iranian people to navigate.

As for Trump, he indicated the U.S. would assist Iran in rebuilding if they agreed to surrender and change their leadership. However, by early April, he seemed to pull back from this demand, instead negotiating a ceasefire and contemplating a peace plan.

The U.S. and Iran established a two-week ceasefire starting April 8th. Yet, Iran continued to target U.S. forces after the ceasefire commenced, casting doubt on its effectiveness. U.S. forces intercepted Iranian attacks, destroying missiles, drones, and hostile ships.

In spite of this, Hegseth stated that the ceasefire remains in place. Daily Caller correspondent Reagan Reese also mentioned that discussions are underway regarding Iran’s new 14-point peace proposal aimed at concluding the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for oil shipments.
