Crocodile Recovery Operation in South Africa
South African authorities conducted a risky airlifting operation over the weekend to remove a large crocodile believed to have attacked local residents.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) mentioned that this initiative was prompted by the disappearance of a 59-year-old businessman from Gauteng last month. He had been identified as Gabriel Bautista, the owner of the Border Country Inn, located a short drive from the nearby river.
A specialized team managed to track the crocodile along the Komati River on Saturday. Unfortunately, the reptile had to be euthanized and taken from the area. Post-mortem examinations indicated that there were human remains found in its stomach.
The operation itself was dramatic, with video footage circulating on social media showing staff retrieving the crocodile via helicopter.
A local business owner had vanished late last month after his Ford Ranger got stuck in a flooded river crossing near croc-infested waters. Reports from the state media, SABC News, stated that the vehicle was swept away as he attempted to navigate the bridge.
Despite a week-long search, the team only identified a large crocodile nearby that was suspected of having attacked the victim.
Officials observed that the crocodile showed signs of having fed recently, displaying long periods of inactivity. SAPS Captain Johan “Poti” Potgieter noted, “We know from experience that crocodiles are not very active after eating a lot. They need to lie in the sun for their digestive systems to start working.”
While monitoring it for several days, they discovered it was only about 150 meters from where the person had been washed off the bridge. Surprisingly, even when the helicopter flew over, the crocodile remained still.
After obtaining the required permits and euthanizing the animal, Potgieter undertook the risky task of being lowered from a helicopter into water filled with crocodiles, being secured with ropes before being pulled to safety. The dangers of the operation were palpable.
During the examination of the crocodile, humanoid remains and six pairs of sandals were discovered in its stomach. These details lead to further investigations as the identity of the body is being confirmed through DNA testing. However, it is still unclear if the sandals are linked to any missing villagers in the region.
