Vigilante 'predator catcher' taken into custody after making a man consume cigarette butts

A well-known vigilante group, Predator Hunter, was arrested in Florida for allegedly assaulting a suspected offender and forcing him to consume used cigarette butts.

Jay Carnicom, a father of five whose videos confronting suspected child sex offenders have attracted over 1 million followers, was taken into custody by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office last week. He faces charges of simple assault and felony extortion, according to jail records.

The officer who made the arrest expressed understanding of the group’s intentions but emphasized that going too far could compromise legal actions against offenders. “If I were a Clay County resident and heard that someone attempting to protect our children was arrested, I would be upset,” said Domenic Panicia, the chief of detectives for the sheriff’s office.

“But you can’t hit people, rob people, or force them to do anything.” Carnicom allegedly tried to press a used cigarette butt into the man’s mouth while filming the incident, claiming, “If you don’t do what I say, I’ll call the police.” Panicia remarked that contacting the police should’ve been the appropriate response from the start.

“The proper way to do something is to call us and ask for help,” he added. “You may think you’re assisting us, but you’re actually hindering the case.”

Police are also considering the intentions behind such confrontational videos shared by influencers like Carnicom, who is widely popular online. “I genuinely believe that most of these cases are pursued for financial gain—views, clicks, subscribers, you name it,” Panicia noted. “If it’s not done correctly, it hampers our efforts. We prefer to handle these situations from the beginning with a proper investigation.”

The sheriff’s office has a unit dedicated to investigating illegal online communications and is currently reviewing information linked to videos such as Carnicom’s, having already looked into hundreds of cases this year.

However, officials pointed out that an adult posing as a child online does not suffice for police to make an arrest if a civilian conducts the investigation.

“We are not in this for the clicks, likes, and views. We’re here to hold criminals accountable,” the sheriff’s office shared in a statement.

Carnicom has posted numerous videos of confrontations with suspected predators, admitting that while his videos might not lead to convictions, he feels compelled to expose these individuals nonetheless.

“If you see me confronting a child predator, it’s likely that I’ve already called the police, and they’re unable to act because there weren’t any real children involved or I wasn’t a law enforcement officer,” he said in a video from March.

Carnicom, an Ohio native, explained that his motivation to catch predators originates from his own childhood trauma; he was sexually abused by a family friend at age 11 in Fremont, Ohio. He revealed that the alleged abuser died by suicide shortly after they faced off at a local Walmart following Carnicom’s online post about their encounter in 2020.
