Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, has adopted a nationalistic stance, urging the U.S. administration to refrain from intervening in Mexican affairs.
“No foreign power will dictate how we govern our nation,” Sheinbaum declared during a speech marking the historic May 5 battle against France in 1862. “We cherish our freedom and are always prepared to defend it.”
In her remarks, Sheinbaum addressed the U.S. government directly, issuing a firm warning.
“History has shown that Mexicans are steadfast in defending their sovereignty,” she noted.
This passionate address coincided with increased pressure from the U.S. on Mexico to eliminate drug cartels. Recently, new drug control measures were announced by the U.S., set to significantly alter the dynamics between the two nations and reshape how American authorities tackle drug trafficking. These policies also imposed greater responsibilities on Mexico and adjusted how aid is linked to performance outcomes.
This new directive followed revelations from the U.S. Department of Justice regarding the governor of Sinaloa and nine associates facing drug trafficking allegations for purportedly cooperating with the Sinaloa cartel in return for financial and political gain. Reports indicated that the U.S. is seeking the arrest and extradition of these individuals. Sheinbaum refuted these claims, asserting that U.S. officials had not provided any substantiated evidence of wrongdoing.
The protection of Ruben Rocha Moya, the Sinaloa governor associated with the ruling MORENA party, is evidently linked to his close relationship with Sheinbaum’s mentor, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The unfolding situation surrounding Rocha Moya might reveal connections and interactions between the MORENA party and the drug cartels entrenched in Mexico.
Sheinbaum’s confrontational approach toward the U.S. has intensified, particularly following the deaths of two U.S. personnel last month during operations against a drug lab in Chihuahua. Reports highlighted that in response to this incident, Sheinbaum demanded a comprehensive investigation, prioritizing foreign agents over significant drug operations within her own country.
