Trump’s Upcoming Meeting with Xi Jinping: Insights from Ambassador Crowley
Ahead of President Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month, Ambassador Monica Crowley shared insights about Trump’s unique style of diplomacy on Wednesday. According to Crowley, foreign leaders seem to appreciate this straightforward approach, as it clarifies the U.S. position under Trump’s leadership.
At a Breitbart News policy event titled “In Praise of American Greatness,” Crowley emphasized that Trump is preparing to enter the meeting from a position of strength. “He has all the cards coming into this meeting,” she remarked, suggesting that such a stance is crucial for meaningful discussions with Xi Jinping. This effort, she implied, is part of Trump’s broader aim to reshape global power dynamics.
Crowley noted that Xi is aware of where Trump stands. “He gets it,” she stated. “That’s why we haven’t seen much backlash from Beijing regarding our actions globally, whether it’s in the Middle East with Iran or in Venezuela. I haven’t noticed Xi publicly complaining or retaliating.”
Trump had initially planned the meeting for May 14 and 15 in Beijing, having postponed talks due to ongoing tensions with Iran. He expressed enthusiasm on Truth Social about “spending time” with Xi, labeling the encounter a “momentous event.” Furthermore, he mentioned that he and First Lady Melania Trump would later host Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, in Washington, D.C.
Crowley, in her capacity as chief of protocols, also discussed Trump’s interactions with foreign leaders during various stages of their meetings. “I tell these leaders that, despite the significant policy and ideological differences, they respect a strong American president. They know exactly where they stand,” she pointed out.
This clarity, according to Crowley, comes from Trump’s direct communication style. “President Trump leaves no question marks about anything,” she explained. “He tells you exactly what he believes and where he stands.”
She further praised Trump’s honesty, saying, “I would venture to say he’s the most honest president we’ve had, apart from George Washington and possibly Abraham Lincoln. Sure, some might not like what he says. The truth can be uncomfortable or even harsh. But he’s always truthful.” Crowley concluded by asserting that world leaders, including Putin and Xi, understand Trump well and know their positions regarding him.
