UCLA Medical School Faces Discrimination Allegations
A comprehensive investigation by the Justice Department has revealed that the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA discriminated against applicants based on their race. This yearlong inquiry, conducted by the department’s Civil Rights Division, indicates that university leaders “intentionally selected applicants based on race.”
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California highlighted that the research concluded UCLA’s assertion—that patients get superior care when treated by a physician of their race—is problematic. The findings showed that Black and Hispanic applicants, on average, were admitted despite having lower academic qualifications compared to their White and Asian counterparts.
Ultimately, the department claimed that this practice violated civil rights laws. It’s important to note that many medical schools, including UCLA, receive a substantial amount of federal funding. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon pointed out, “UCLA’s admissions process has focused on racial demographics rather than merit and excellence.” She emphasized the illegality and un-American nature of racial discrimination in admissions.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Esseri echoed this sentiment, stating, “Federal law and Supreme Court precedent are clear: There is no place for racial discrimination in our nation’s higher education institutions.” He condemned the actions of the UCLA School of Medicine as contrary to the Constitution and the foundational principles of the country.
A spokesperson for the UCLA School of Medicine responded to the allegations, claiming that its admissions process is based on merit and a thorough evaluation of each candidate. They refuted the assertion of any legal violations, expressing confidence in their practices aimed at ensuring access to quality education for all qualified students.
In light of the ongoing review of the Justice Department’s report, the spokesperson insisted that the David Geffen School of Medicine remains committed to providing equal opportunities and adhering fully to federal and state laws.
