Major Operation Launched Against Drug Market in Los Angeles
A significant law enforcement initiative aimed at dismantling a well-known open-air drug market in Los Angeles’ MacArthur Park commenced on Wednesday, according to an announcement from the Department of Justice.
Details about the “MacArthur Park Liberation Operation” were shared on social media by Bill Esseri, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. He indicated:
“We have initially reported the seizure of at least 19 kilograms of fentanyl and 17 arrests during this operation.”
Esseri stated that authorities are monitoring street sellers and bulk suppliers of narcotics, particularly fentanyl and methamphetamine. He noted that over the past day, law enforcement at both federal and local levels have started arresting 25 individuals charged with serious drug offenses, including possession and distribution of dangerous substances like fentanyl and methamphetamine.
As the operation unfolded, at least 19 kilograms of fentanyl were confiscated, with 17 arrests made. The initiative specifically targeted the “notorious open-air drug market” described by Esseri.
Notably, a drug lord based in Calabasas is currently in federal custody and could potentially face a life sentence if convicted. Other suspects involved in the operation have also been sentenced to extended prison terms.
Esseri shared a video that depicted the scale of the operation, which included over 300 personnel from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Department of Justice, and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). According to reports, the LAPD is collaborating with federal authorities solely in this drug enforcement effort, emphasizing that immigration issues are not part of the operation.
Video clips showcased many suspects being detained or arrested during the crackdown.
Esseri remarked, “We are taking action against an open-air drug market that has gone unchecked for far too long under California policy. It’s distressing to see active sales and use of these substances in public.” He expressed this sentiment during an on-site interview.
The Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche issued a stern warning to drug dealers: “Your sanctuary in Los Angeles is over.”
The DEA conveyed that a goal of this operation is to “cleanse the community” in anticipation of major events like the World Cup and Olympics.
Interestingly, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has expressed discontent with the federal operation, citing a similar initiative that took place in MacArthur Park back in July 2025. She shared on social media the scene of children playing just prior to the military presence arriving, asserting, “I went to the park immediately upon hearing about this and communicated that it needs to cease. It’s just unacceptable.”
Federal officials countered that the mayor did not possess the authority to halt the undertaking.
