Obama’s Remarks on Politicization of Justice and Military
In a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, former President Barack Obama made a pointed observation regarding the politicization of the justice system and military under President Donald Trump.
Obama expressed a concern that politicizing the criminal justice system makes it impossible to ensure fair judgments. He stated, “We cannot overcome the politicization of the criminal justice system,” reflecting on how unfortunate it is when those in power target political opponents.
Some viewers might interpret this remark as ironic, especially given recent allegations by FBI Director Kash Patel, who claimed that the FBI misled the courts to obtain warrants for spying on Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign.
Further, Obama emphasized that restoring the integrity of the Department of Justice is crucial. He pointed out, “This will restore some sense that the Department of Justice is making independent judgments about specific cases and prosecutions.”
On the topic of the military, Obama implored, “Please don’t politicize our military.” He reminded Colbert that, as president, one holds the title of commander-in-chief, which carries the responsibility to lead the military without infringing upon constitutional principles.
The former president continued, acknowledging the need to find solutions to restore honor and integrity. He also highlighted the importance of the president maintaining focus solely on the job without juggling too many additional responsibilities.
In a lighter moment, Obama encouraged Colbert, suggesting he might be a fit for the presidency and noting that “standards have changed.” Colbert, jokingly, remarked that people were encouraging him to run, to which Obama humorously acknowledged the notion.
Colbert clarified his thoughts, suggesting such an idea might be rather foolish. Obama, pushing back a bit, said he believed Colbert could certainly outperform some of the current political figures.
The playful banter carried on until Colbert inquired if Obama was, in fact, endorsing him. “That wasn’t the case,” Obama replied with a laugh.
This conversation took place just weeks before Colbert’s show was set to conclude, as CBS decided against renewing the series for another season due to financial considerations.
