Rubio holds White House briefing and receives widespread acclaim ahead of Italy visit

Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on Tuesday in the White House briefing room, preparing for his upcoming trip to Rome. During this event, he issued a clear warning to Iran, showcasing confidence that drew positive remarks from conservative circles online.

“This visit isn’t tied to anything except our usual diplomatic practices; other secretaries of state have done similar trips,” Rubio stated, downplaying the significance of his Italy visit. This meeting happened just two days before his scheduled discussions in the Vatican, amidst rising tensions involving President Trump, Pope Leo, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni regarding the U.S.-Iran situation. Rubio used the press briefing to defend the administration’s policies on Iran and suggested that the U.S. remains staunch in its pressure tactics.

“Iran is facing significant damage to its economy, something that could affect generations due to their own actions,” Rubio remarked. He humorously urged, “They should check themselves before they destroy themselves,” referencing a line from a popular rap song.

As a Catholic, Rubio is expected to meet with Pope Leo on Thursday, especially given the pope’s prior criticism of Trump’s approach to Middle East peace efforts.

Pope Leo has previously voiced concerns for the Iranian populace, deeming certain actions against them “unacceptable.” He highlighted the nuances of international law but stressed a moral imperative for the wellbeing of all.

In a related remark, it seems Rubio’s comments referred to a concerning statement made by Trump about the fate of an entire civilization, expressing a mix of irritation and urgency over the nuclear situation in Iran. Trump conveyed a straightforward message to the pope, stating that, whether or not it pleases him, Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons. He underscored the potential global risks posed if this were to happen.

Rubio’s itinerary also includes a meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has recently distanced herself from the U.S., likely due to escalating domestic and political pressures related to the increasing Middle East conflict. Notably, Meloni expressed her disapproval of any U.S. military reduction in Italy, contrasting with Trump’s broader strategy of redeploying forces in Europe.

Italy remains crucial for U.S. security, hosting around 13,000 active-duty military personnel at various bases. Rubio, having recently garnered attention for his engaging performance at the podium while filling in for Caroline Leavitt, brought a noticeable presence to the briefing. He was praised by several conservative commentators and noted for his ability to converse in multiple languages, demonstrating his readiness for the diplomatic engagements ahead.

Many, including Florida Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez, commended Rubio’s rhetorical skills, stating that Trump made a wise choice in appointing him to this role.
