The fastest growing state in the US, as reported by IRS data, is a red state.

According to recent IRS data, Texas and Florida are the primary states attracting new residents, yet South Carolina is experiencing the fastest growth rate. This has led many Americans to relocate south in search of lower taxes, abundant job opportunities, and an overall improved quality of life.

In fact, South Carolina has the highest per capita influx of newcomers compared to its size, with just over 1% of its population being new arrivals from other states. Essentially, for every 100 residents, one individual comes from elsewhere in the country.

Interestingly, the Palmetto State added over 59,000 new residents from 2022 to 2023. This isn’t just about the sheer number of people; it’s also a matter of income. The state welcomed more than 29,000 new taxpayers, generating roughly $4.1 billion in revenue. Such changes are expected to positively impact the local economy by enhancing purchasing power and filling job vacancies in growing sectors.

When looking at the broader picture, Texas and Florida, while larger in population, still manage to draw the most newcomers overall. In 2023, Texas reported 56,473 new residents, closely followed by Florida with 55,349.

This migration highlights a stark contrast with some of the nation’s costliest states, particularly those governed by Democrats, which are facing significant losses. Between 2022 and 2023, California saw a decrease of over 100,000 taxpayers, while New York experienced a drop of nearly 72,000.

These losses in revenue reflect the ongoing shift in demographics, with California losing about $12 billion and New York about $10 billion, particularly as higher-income residents opt for relocation. Taken together, these patterns suggest a reallocation of both people and economic resources across the country.

If this trend persists, it could significantly reshape the landscape of population growth and economic dynamics in the years to come.
