Dialogue Between Rubio and Pope Leo at the Vatican

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Pope Leo at the Vatican on Thursday, engaged in what was described as a “constructive” conversation amid rising tensions between President Donald Trump and the pope concerning the U.S.-Iran situation.

A State Department official mentioned, “Today’s conversation was friendly and constructive,” reflecting on the meeting’s positive tone.

Rubio, a Catholic, sought to reaffirm the collaboration between the Vatican and the U.S. during this private meeting. Trump had directed Rubio to convey a straightforward message: Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons.

Discussions covered the Middle East situation and shared interests in the Western Hemisphere, according to a State Department statement.

This encounter marked the first private meeting with the pope for the Trump administration in nearly a year, amidst ongoing tensions.

In a previous critique, Pope Leo emphasized the moral implications of the conflict with Iran and cautioned that rhetoric directed at the Iranian populace was dangerously inappropriate.

The pope stated, “There are also threats like this against the entire Iranian people, which is truly unacceptable. There is certainly an issue of international law here, but beyond that there is a moral issue for the benefit of all people.”

Earlier, Trump expressed his stance, emphasizing that regardless of how the Pope may feel, Iran cannot be allowed to have nuclear weapons due to global security concerns.

After his talk with the pope, Rubio also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State of the Holy See, to discuss mutual priorities amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

According to Piggott, the leaders reviewed humanitarian efforts in the Western Hemisphere and initiatives to foster lasting peace in the Middle East, highlighting the strong partnership between the U.S. and the Vatican in promoting religious freedom.

Rubio is also expected to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday.
