Pennsylvania Socialist Aiming to Win District Votes Opposes Child Sex Abuse Bill Two Weeks Before Election

Controversy Surrounds Pennsylvania Candidate’s Votes on Child Trafficking Bills

In the lead-up to the primary election, Pennsylvania’s socialist candidate for the state House of Representatives cast votes that raised eyebrows. Specifically, he voted against a bill aimed at funding child advocacy centers and was the sole dissenting vote on legislation that would elevate the crime of infant trafficking.

Democratic state Representative Chris Love opposed a bill that sought to reclassify child trafficking from a misdemeanor to a first-degree felony. He also rejected another bill that would allocate fines from convicted child sex offenders to support advocacy centers for children. Both measures passed the state House Judiciary Committee with a vote of 25-1 on Monday. Love is among the front-runners in the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District set for May 19.

Love has the backing of several progressive groups, including the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats. Notable supporters include Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. He compared the enthusiasm surrounding his campaign to that of Zoran Mamdani’s recent mayoral run in New York.

The legislative package contains a total of six bills, most of which advanced through committee without opposition, as reported by Pennsylvania Capital Star. The primary sponsor, Republican state representative Donna Schuelen, noted that the intent of House Bill 910 is to address a gap that previously allowed child traffickers to face only misdemeanor charges.

In his defense, Love explained to investigators that the human trafficking bill could unintentionally implicate parents who provide child support to relatives or friends. He expressed concern that the funding for advocacy centers could create a “perverse financial incentive to incarcerate more people” and promised to advocate for an amendment to find alternative funding sources. The ACLU of Pennsylvania has also voiced opposition to the human trafficking bill.

Love’s Democratic competitors wasted no time criticizing him. Pediatric surgeon Ara Stanford stated that Love’s vote was not just politically divisive but fundamentally incorrect. A spokesperson for state Senator Sharif Street accused Love of catering to a small faction of extremists instead of prioritizing the needs of Philadelphians.

The Inquirer noted that Love had previously opposed bills aimed at increasing penalties for hate crimes, citing worries about mass incarceration.
