DeSantis Responds to Obama’s Criticism of Justice Department Politicization

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis hit back after former President Barack Obama made remarks about the Trump administration’s alleged politicization of the Justice Department.

During a speech, Obama stated, “The White House should not be able to direct the attorney general to prosecute anyone the president wants to prosecute.” He emphasized that it isn’t acceptable for those in power to use government resources to target political adversaries or favor their allies.

DeSantis, in a post on X, retorted, “I would like to ask you to say a few words about the Russian collusion hoax.”

Obama’s comments came during an interview with Stephen Colbert, where he reflected on upholding norms while in office, saying, “And we need to do some work to get back to this basic norm, and perhaps we need to codify it now.” In his view, the attorney general should serve the people and not just the president.

He warned that the politicization of the Justice Department is a significant threat to the country, suggesting that while poor policies and elections can be overcome, the integrity of the criminal justice system is crucial. Obama expressed a desire to see greater independence within the Justice Department when it comes to decisions on prosecutions and specific cases.

Under Obama’s presidency, the FBI initiated a counterintelligence investigation in 2016 to assess any connections between Trump campaign associates and Russian officials. This investigation carried on into Trump’s term under special counsel Robert Mueller, who discovered multiple connections but ultimately did not establish that the campaign colluded with Russia in attempting to interfere in the election.

In 2025, Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, claimed that Obama and his team misused intelligence to advance their narrative regarding Russian interference, saying they produced assessments they knew to be false.

Critics contest Gabbard’s accusations. FOX News Digital has reached out for comments from President Obama regarding these statements.
