US-Iran Tensions Escalate Amid Self-Defense Claims

A representative from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) accused the United States on Friday of conducting what they termed a “self-defense attack” to safeguard U.S. interests in the region. They claimed this action caused “significant damage” in retaliation.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees military operations in the Middle East, stated on Thursday that they “thwarted an unprovoked Iranian attack” and responded with a self-defense strike that reportedly destroyed Iranian assets involved. According to them, missiles, drones, and small boats targeted U.S. naval facilities, although they failed to inflict any damage. Additionally, there were reports of an offensive by the U.S. military aimed at Iranian ports and vessels.

President Donald Trump had previously announced a ceasefire in Operation Epic Fury, designed to limit Iran’s capacity to facilitate global terrorism. This initiative has seen a joint U.S.-Israeli operation remove numerous Iranian officials, including their Supreme Leader Khamenei, which has left the Iranian regime more fragmented. Trump expressed frustration recently, noting that negotiations with Iran have been challenging due to confusion over leadership. Despite this, some indications suggest that discussions are ongoing, with both sides exchanging proposals to potentially conclude the conflict.

During his discussions about the U.S. assault on Iranian assets, Trump denied claims that it violated the ceasefire or escalated hostilities. He referred to the strike as merely a “tap of love” and asserted that the ceasefire remains intact.

On his platform Truth Social, Trump mentioned that an American destroyer had navigated out of the Strait of Hormuz only to be attacked by Iran. He reported that while the three destroyers emerged unscathed, the Iranian attackers faced considerable losses, stating, “These boats quickly and efficiently sank to the bottom of the sea.”

Trump characterized Iran as “not a normal country,” accusing its leadership of lunacy. He further shared a meme on Truth Social depicting a U.S. Navy ship neutralizing an Iranian drone, with a caption suggesting aggression against Iran.

The IRGC declared that the U.S. breached the ceasefire by targeting Iranian vessels, attributing the violation to the American trade blockade rather than the self-defense attack. Iranian operations have largely consisted of aggressive actions against neighboring Gulf nations and obstructing maritime activity in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation for Iran’s disruptions to global commerce, the U.S. has imposed its own shipping blockade, but Trump clarified that it is not bound by the ceasefire.

Ebrahim Zolfakari, a spokesman for the IRGC, accused U.S. forces of attacking civilian areas, although he may have been referencing the CENTCOM operation. Reports indicated that some regional allies, including the UAE, have coordinated their own defensive actions against repeated Iranian assaults on oil facilities.

Zolfakari stated, “The criminal and aggressor United States and its allies should know that Iran will respond decisively to any acts of aggression.” Separately, the IRGC continued its attacks on U.S. military positions, claiming significant damage was inflicted contrary to Pentagon assertions.

Some reports claimed that Iranian intelligence indicated U.S. forces suffered heavy losses, while the U.S. military has not corroborated these claims. As tensions rise, diplomatic discussions endure; Secretary of State Marco Rubio updated the media in Rome about Iran contemplating a peace proposal from the U.S., with expectations of a timely response.

“We’ll see what it means. We’re hopeful that this could lead to serious negotiations,” Rubio remarked.
