"What distinguishes this from a 'whites only' policy?" Sara Gonzales challenges the organizer of a Muslim-only water park event

Controversy Over Exclusivity at Texas Water Park Event

This week, a segment on Blaze TV highlighted an event at a water park in Grand Prairie, Texas, that drew sharp criticism from host Sarah Gonzalez. She expressed her concerns about a Muslim-only event, prompting Governor Greg Abbott to threaten funding withdrawal and potential shutdown of the venue.

The issue arose from a flyer that originally stated “Muslims Only,” which was later modified to indicate “modest clothing only” in response to backlash. Gonzalez pointed out this change during an interview with event organizer Dr. Amina Knight, asking for clarification on the situation.

“I just want to make sure I have this right. Your flyer initially read ‘Muslims only,’ but then it got updated, correct?” Gonzalez queried. Knight firmly denied any misrepresentation.

Knight explained that the event’s flyers had traditionally been circulated privately and had not previously caused any conflicts. She recalled being contacted by the New York Post about the flyer, expressing surprise at the attention it garnered.

According to Knight, misconceptions around the event stemmed from people who held preconceived notions about Muslims. She mentioned her husband’s comments, suggesting that such individuals cherry-pick details to fuel their narratives.

Gonzalez pressed further, suggesting that the wording on the flyer implied a desire to exclude non-Muslims. She raised a hypothetical scenario about a private organization renting the water park and posting “whites only,” questioning the fairness of such exclusivity irrespective of the group’s identity.

In response, Knight defended the event, highlighting its focus on young Muslim girls and promoting modest dress in a society often preoccupied with conventional standards of beauty.

Gonzalez countered by asking how this differed from a KKK event. She indicated that discrimination laws prohibit excluding individuals based on religion and sought to understand Knight’s reasoning. Knight explained their cultural context, framing the occasion as a celebration of an EID event, while also commenting on Gonzalez’s questioning style.

“It’s just the tone you’re using,” Knight remarked, revealing her discomfort with the line of questioning.
