Trump Reacts to Virginia Supreme Court Overturning Democrat Gerrymander Plan: 'Big Victory'

Virginia Supreme Court Rejects Redistricting Plan

President Donald Trump expressed his approval after the Virginia Supreme Court turned down a Democratic initiative aimed at redrawing the state’s congressional districts ahead of the midterm elections, calling it a “huge victory.”

“This is a huge victory for the Republican Party and America in Virginia,” Trump stated in a post on social media. “The Virginia Supreme Court defeated the Democrats’ horrible gerrymandering. Let’s Make America Great Again!”

This response follows a 4-3 ruling from the Virginia Supreme Court, which determined that the legislative methods used to promote the redistricting plan “violates Article 12, Section 1 of the Virginia Constitution.”

The court noted that, on March 6, 2026, the Virginia General Assembly presented a constitutional amendment to voters that would permit partisan gerrymandering of federal congressional districts. “We hold that the legislative process employed to advance this proposal violates Article 12, Section 1 of the Virginia Constitution,” they reiterated.

The ruling came after a vote in April where Virginians supported a redistricting plan that would shift the state’s congressional representation from six Democrats and five Republicans to ten Democrats and one Republican.

“Justice has been served,” wrote former Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin in an essay. “From the beginning, this was the most blatant violation of the Virginia Constitution. Abigail Spanberger and the Democrats in Richmond intentionally violated the Constitution and disenfranchised millions of Virginians.”

A statement from Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, shared by reporter Nick Minnock, highlighted concern over the ruling. Jones said it silences the voices of “millions of Virginians who voted in every corner of our commonwealth.”

“Today, the Virginia Supreme Court chose to put politics over the rule of law by ruling to overturn the April 21 special election on redistricting,” Jones remarked. “This decision will silence the voices of millions of Virginians who voted in every corner of the commonwealth and increase national anxiety about the state of our democracy.”
