Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed on Saturday that he thinks the conflict with Ukraine could soon come to a close.
“I believe this issue is nearing its conclusion,” he stated to reporters, as reported by Reuters.
This comment from Putin came shortly after President Trump declared a three-day ceasefire to honor the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II, coinciding with a significant prisoner exchange between the two nations.
The ceasefire is set to commence on Saturday and last until Monday, as mentioned by Trump on Truth Social. He noted that while Russia celebrates Victory Day, Ukraine shares a similar sentiment due to the implications of World War II.
The ceasefire also entails halting all movement activities and facilitating the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side. “This was my direct request, and I’m thankful for the agreement achieved by Presidents Putin and Zelenskiy,” he added.
The day featured what was described as Russia’s most diminutive Victory Day parade in quite some time.
The ongoing war in Ukraine has persisted for over four years since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022. The Kremlin initially expected a swift victory, however, it has yet to fully seize the entire Donbass region.
On a different note, U.S. Special Envoy Witkoff stated that U.S., Ukrainian, and Russian representatives have consented to the prisoner exchange.
When asked about potential discussions with European leaders, Putin expressed a desire to speak with German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. He mentioned that he’d consider talks with Ukrainian President Zelenskiy only after a permanent peace agreement is reached.
President Zelenskiy authorized a prisoner exchange for those captured during the ongoing conflict that escalated when Russia initiated a full-scale invasion.
In a recent communication, Zelenskiy indicated, “In the context of the negotiation process facilitated by the Americans, we obtained Russia’s agreement for a prisoner exchange of 1,000 for 1,000. A ceasefire is also needed on May 9th, 10th, and 11th.” He highlighted that Ukraine is actively working to bring home its citizens held by Russia and directed his teams to promptly arrange for the necessary preparations for the exchange.
Zelenskiy also expressed gratitude towards President Trump for his role in the negotiations, stating he anticipates the U.S. will ensure Russia adheres to the agreement.
