Karen Bass criticized for surprising choice in mayoral debate

Mayor Karen Bass Withdraws from Mayoral Forum Amid Controversy

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing criticism after pulling out of a mayoral forum just days following a debate incident where Spencer Pratt was reportedly assaulted, according to an online poll.

The organizers, the League of Women Voters and the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs, announced on Instagram that Bass would no longer participate in the forum set to air on FOX 11 on May 13. They expressed regret over her decision.

“This forum aimed to offer Los Angeles voters a chance to hear directly from candidates during challenging times,” was noted in their statement.

Initially, five candidates were invited, with four confirming their attendance: Bass, City Councilman Nithya Raman, businessman Adam Miller, and community activist Ray Huang. Reports indicate that Pratt, a former reality star, declined the invitation, citing schedule conflicts.

Mike Bonin, who oversees the Pat Brown Institute, expressed disappointment, mentioning that it was unfortunate voters wouldn’t have the chance to view the mayor alongside her primary opponent in a televised format, especially as interest in the race grows.

Bonin recalled that when discussions about the forum began, Bass’s team indicated she would be available for the event. Invitations were sent, and she confirmed her participation on April 22.

A document signed by Bass on that date, verifying her attendance, was included in the organizers’ announcement. However, on May 7, she decided to withdraw, with her campaign consultant stating that after debating her two main opponents, it was determined they were not pursuing the position any longer.

Bass’s campaign defended her withdrawal, claiming she would be in Sacramento advocating for issues such as housing, homelessness, and recovery from recent fires, as well as discussing city-state partnerships related to the Olympics and World Cup. Campaign spokesperson Alex Stack shared this information.

Bonin mentioned that his team had plans to travel to Sacramento, but he did not acknowledge any potential conflicts regarding the confirmed date.

The League of Women Voters and the Pat Brown Institute emphasized their commitment to hosting unbiased candidate forums that focus on essential issues for voters, expressing their dedication to facilitating meaningful interactions between the electorate and candidates.

Stack elaborated that the mayor had engaged in debates with her top two opponents twice that week, asserting it was apparent that neither was suited for the role.

A live broadcast of a debate featuring Candidates Miller, Fan, and Raman is scheduled for May 13 at 6 p.m. on FOX 11.

The media has reached out to the mayor’s campaign for additional comments.
