Chipper Jones honors Bobby Cox as 'a second father' in heartfelt tribute following the passing of the Hall of Fame manager

Tributes Pour In for Bobby Cox, Legendary Braves Manager

This weekend, the baseball community was rocked by the news of Bobby Cox’s passing. The legendary manager of the Atlanta Braves left an indelible mark, and few expressed this better than Chipper Jones, a longtime star of the team.

After learning of Cox’s death at age 84, Jones shared a heartfelt tribute, writing, “In this time of loss, I cannot remain silent. I struggle to convey all that Bobby Cox meant to me and so many others in Braves Country.”

Jones described Cox as “a human leader and a second father to many Atlanta Braves.” The connection between them was profound; Cox had drafted Jones as the No. 1 overall pick in 1990. He managed Jones from his debut in 1993 until stepping down in 2010. Under Cox’s leadership, the Braves flourished, clinching 14 consecutive division titles, five National League championships, and winning the World Series in 1995.

Reflecting on this legacy, Jones acknowledged that Cox not only transformed the Braves organization but also shaped his own career. “He’s probably the number one reason I played my entire career with the Braves,” Jones noted. “He gave me the opportunity to play baseball in the draft.”

Even amidst his grief, Jones saw evidence of Cox’s influence during his sons’ baseball games on that fateful day. He recalled shouting encouragement similar to what Cox would say: “‘Come on, boy. I got this!'”

In a lighthearted moment, Jones added that his sons won both games that day, joking that, “Bobby had a hand, that’s for sure!”

But Jones wasn’t the only one to honor Cox. Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine spoke about Cox’s incomparable passion and commitment to his players, describing his dynamic presence in the dugout as nothing less than inspiring. “The moment he came down to the dugout with his uniform on and his cleats on…there was nothing but passion to win the game,” Glavine said.

John Smoltz also offered his perspective, crediting Cox with giving him confidence he lacked. “I wouldn’t be a Hall of Famer without him,” Smoltz remarked.

Meanwhile, Andruw Jones resonated with Chipper’s sentiments, describing Cox as a father figure to many players. “Bobby meant everything to me in my baseball career,” he said. “He was like a second father to me.” This recurring theme underscores that Cox was more than just a revered manager; he was a mentor who molded the Braves into a family, building lasting connections across generations.
