Trump criticizes Gorsuch and Barrett for tariff decision in Truth Social post

Trump Criticizes Supreme Court’s Recent Rulings

Former President Donald Trump has expressed strong disapproval of the Supreme Court’s recent decisions regarding tariffs and birthright citizenship. He feels that the rulings, particularly against $159 billion in tariffs, show a lack of respect for the country and its citizens.

On a recent evening, Trump directed his dissatisfaction towards Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett. He mentioned, “I have another method for imposing tariffs, though it’s more complicated and slow. It feels like Neil and Amy just had a rough day, but our nation can only endure so many unfavorable rulings before everything breaks!”

“Sometimes, decisions really should be driven by common sense and strong judgment,” he added.

Concerns Over Birthright Citizenship

Trump voiced that the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding birthright citizenship could potentially favor China. He’s aiming to put an end to the practice of “birth tourism,” where families spend money to secure U.S. citizenship for children born during their temporary stay in the U.S.

He expressed his frustrations, saying, “I choose people who will benefit this country, not harm it.” Notably, he claimed his unique experience as the first sitting president to attend a Supreme Court session should be acknowledged, criticizing what he perceives as an impending negative ruling on the citizenship issue. “We’re on track to become the only nation to uphold this practice, which is both costly and unsustainable,” he stated.

The Court’s Decisions

In late February, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 against Trump’s use of tariffs, which he justified under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act for trade and national security purposes. Justices Gorsuch, Barrett, and Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the liberal justices, while only Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh disagreed with the majority’s stance on the constitutionality of such tariffs.

Trump began his remarks about Gorsuch by saying, “I ‘love’ him. He’s quite bright, but he went against a pivotal decision for our nation regarding tariffs.” He also commented on Barrett’s similar position, lamenting, “They were appointed to make choices that seem detrimental to our country.” He expressed disbelief that these decisions costing the U.S. $159 billion might lead to repaying entities that have previously taken advantage of the nation.

Concerns About Future Rulings

Trump wishes for the Supreme Court to consider allowing these financial repercussions to be overturned without allowing companies to demand refunds, even though the ruling didn’t explicitly allow this.

He explained his position, saying, “They could have handled this with a straightforward ruling, confirming that payments made do not warrant repayment.” He questioned why this wasn’t addressed.

Call for Loyalty Among Justices

In the wake of these decisions, Trump noted that Republican nominees to the Supreme Court don’t seem to be backing him as expected. He remarked, “In modern times, Democrats don’t even need to ‘pack the court’ because many Republicans seem to be inclined towards liberal interpretations.” He urged that loyalty from justices appointed by him should be upheld.

“I’m dedicated to making America great again, yet those I’ve selected seem to lack regard for our nation,” he reiterated. “While Democratic judges stay loyal to their appointments, Republican judges often feel the need to prove their independence at the cost of our shared goals.”
